1992 DAIMLER DOUBLE-SIX

From 1972 Jaguar's 5.3-litre V12 engine was available in the XJ range, and for the Daimler version a name used by the company from 1926 to 1938 was revived. Sir William Lyons had retired from Jaguar in 1972 and the new chairman was FRW (Lofty) England. Lofty England had been a Daimler apprentice from 1927 to 1932 and taken second place in the first ever RAC rally driving a 30/40 hp Daimler Double-Six and so he decreed that the new V12 Daimler would be known as Double-Six.

THE CAR

Unlike the Jaguar, the twelve-cylinder Daimler had the same radiator grill as its six-cylinder sibling, and externally only the badges distinguished them. The Double-Six followed the same changes as the Sovereign from Series I to Series III, although the Sovereign name was transferred to Jaguar, the Double-Six name remained with Daimler throughout Series III production, which continued until 1992.

In late 1972, the particularly well-equipped Double-Six Vanden Plas appeared. On a 4 inches (100 mm) longer wheelbase, this model also received a black vinyl roof to set it apart.

A two-door coupé was offered in the Double-Six Series II range from 1975 to 1977, as an addition to the four-door saloon. It was marketed as the Daimler Double-Six two door.

The Series III, the final derivative of the Daimler Double-Six, arrived in 1979 and like its predecessors benefitted from the clean cut, new body designed by famed Italian design house, Pininfarina. The new design featured more glass, slightly squarer lines around the roof area and up to date front and rear styling. The Series III soldiered on until the early 90’s, outliving the XJ6, the departure of which was delayed by problems installing the engine in the new XJ40 series.

This was the flagship car in the Jaguar/Daimler line and was produced until the very end of 1992. It would be hard to imagine news footage of the 1980’s and early 1990’s without a member of the cabinet or the House of Windsor ascending elegantly out of a Double-Six. No other car of that period epitomised brisk luxury travel like a Daimler and in such a truly understated British fashion. This car was not concerned with the pomp and showmanship of a Rolls-Royce, it was a Daimler and it meant business.

OUR CAR

Imported from Japan and registered in the UK in 2016, this beautiful Series III Double-Six is finished in Catkin metallic with Doeskin leather interior. This model is the most desirable with its smooth 5.3 litre V12 engine providing plenty of power and it comes with power steering, air conditioning, headlamp wash wipe and electric windows throughout. Having covered a mere 79,183km (49,202 miles), this 32 year old Daimler is in time-warp condition. The paintwork is unmarked as is the interior, with the leather showing no signs of wear, the walnut dashboard and door trims are also unblemished.

The car is an absolute joy to sit in and drive. A wonderful environment to be in and ready to tackle the longest journeys in serene comfort, but when you need to press on the power delivery is smooth and effortless and everything you could wish for. The very epitomy of the jaguar slogan when it launced the XJ series 'Grace, Space and Pace'.
